Minimalist Gmail Firefox Extension

Matt Constatine has come up with a fantastic Minimalist Gmail Firefox extension which cuts out all the guff in Gmail and leaves you with the bare essentials. The other day I was using Gmail without the extension and noticed that Gmail has actually got quite cluttered. If you like it, a donation is the best thank you.

  1. Since I started using Chrome I find Firefox overwhelming. However, despite Chrome’s rather useful “Developer” tool, Firefox is still streets ahead when it comes to developer plug-ins. Then again, I know which ones I like in FF and haven’t really spent the time browsing plugins in Chrome as they were only recently enabled.

I now use Personal Menu in FF to remove the menus and replace them with two small buttons. And I use the Web Developer button to toggle by developer toolbar on and off. I considered checking out Minimalist and might still, but for now, these tool simple add-ons do the job for me.

  2. My god! how many errors in one comment. I don’t know how to delete comments so I’ll just write it again, without errors:

  3. Did you know you can hide the Firefox menu and then press the ALT key to make it show up whenever you need it? I think that’s similar to what Personal Menu does?

I’ve noticed a mass exodus from once faithful Firefox users to Chrome. Something irks me about Chrome, I guess its because I don’t want to succumb to Google’s will entirely and use their web browser as well.

I do use SRware Iron from time-to-time which is a fork of Chromium without Google’s snoop settings (at least that’s what they say). I guess its a bit pointless as I still use most of the Google apps.

Regardless I’m sticking with Firefox ….!

I also use a portable version of Firefox (from PortableApps) and I’ve noticed there is now a portable version of Chrome too. As I mentioned in the PeopleSoft Wiki, portable versions of these browsers are great for testing web sites on different browsers: http://www.peoplesoftwiki.com/testing-with-portable-browsers

Ok that’s long enough for a comment, its longer than most of my posts.

  4. By the way, for all you Chrome users out there, you can use CTRL + B to show and hide the bookmarks toolbar.
